Description

This poster documents a May 5, 1997 performance at The Fillmore featuring James with Third Eye Blind, capturing a moment when both acts were experiencing significant visibility on opposite sides of the Atlantic. James were touring in support of Whiplash, continuing their long-running presence in UK alternative music with a catalog that balanced introspective songwriting and expansive live performances, while Third Eye Blind were in the midst of their breakout year following the release of their self-titled debut album, which would soon become a defining record of late-1990s American radio rock. Designed collaboratively by James A. Winters and Arlene Owseichik, the poster is part of the Fillmore’s long-standing tradition of commissioning artist-designed works to document touring acts. Issued as an offset lithograph and printed by Great Impressions in South San Francisco, the piece serves as a visual record of a transitional moment in 1997, when British alternative veterans and emerging U.S. mainstream acts shared the same stages during a rapidly shifting musical landscape.
