Description

This poster documents a December 4, 1998 performance at the Fillmore in San Francisco featuring Los Lobos with Ozomatli and Villains, bringing together artists who each represented distinct strands of roots-influenced, socially conscious music at the end of the 1990s. Los Lobos, by this point decades into their career, were widely respected for their ability to blend rock, blues, folk, and traditional Mexican music into a sound that remained both culturally grounded and constantly evolving. Ozomatli, then a rising force, reflected a newer, politically engaged Los Angeles scene that fused Latin rhythms, hip-hop, funk, and activism into high-energy live performances, while Villains rounded out the bill with a grittier alternative edge. Designed by Arlene Owseichik as part of the Fillmore’s long-running commissioned poster program, the piece was produced as an offset lithograph and printed by Great Impressions in South San Francisco. It stands as a visual record of a moment when the Fillmore regularly hosted lineups that bridged generations, cultures, and genres, emphasizing the venue’s role as a meeting point for diverse musical traditions.
