Description

This poster documents an August 31, 1995 performance at The Fillmore featuring Spearhead, Ben Harper, Aceyalone, and Brooklyn Funk Essentials, a lineup that reflects the mid-1990s convergence of hip-hop, funk, soul, and socially conscious songwriting. At the time, Spearhead—fronted by Michael Franti—were gaining recognition for their politically engaged blend of rap, jazz, and reggae influences, while Ben Harper was emerging as a distinctive voice bridging folk, blues, and alternative rock. Aceyalone represented the West Coast’s independent hip-hop movement, and Brooklyn Funk Essentials brought an international, genre-crossing sensibility rooted in acid jazz and funk. Designed by Randel "Randy" Chavez as part of the Fillmore’s venue poster series, this offset lithograph captures a moment when the Fillmore regularly hosted forward-thinking, cross-genre bills that reflected the increasingly fluid boundaries of 1990s alternative music culture.
